If you have an Xbox, you probably want to stay away from the red ring of death and have heard of weird ways of fixing it like the Towel Trick. The “trick” behind the Towel Trick is that you wrap a towel around your Xbox so it gets hot enough to somehow get rid of the red ring of death. Here is the hard truth. Yes the towel trick can work, but, and there is a but. But it will only work for a few weeks and you end up damaging your Xbox so that it may never work again. Keep reading and I’ll explain to you in more detail.
This is why you get the red 3 flashing lights: it has to do with the solder underneath the chips. Microsoft decided to try and save money by using a cheaper material for the solder that was better for the environment, but the quality wasn’t as good. When the Xbox 360 heats up, the soldering joints expand because it is made of some sort of metal. The soldering joint is made to expand with heat, but the underlying problem has to do with the metals contracting when it cools. When it cools, it forms these air bubbles that cause weak spots called cold solder joints. What happens is under the chips where these weak points are formed, they being to crack with the Xbox 360 always heating up and cooling down.
The Xbox RROD Towel trick causes more problems down the line and will cause more cracks to form and more air bubbles.
The towel trick only works for a few days because it gets so hot that it melts the solder joints but creates more cracks down the line. These hairline cracks are large enough so that current doesn’t pass through to the chips.
I highly recommend that you take a look at and buy 360FixKit to fix your Xbox.
